ANNIE'S SURGERY
This is Annie, a 5 month old female
Chihuahua. She was found in a high kill LA shelter, with a possible
broken leg. Because she had a harness on, meaning she may have an owner,
she was kept at the shelter for 10 days. She was not x rayed, only
splinted. As soon as we got her from the shelter , we took her to Dr.
Daryl Mabley, of Arbor Animal Hospital in Irvine. He x rayed and
discovered her leg was indeed broken, the radius was broken in 3 places,
the ulna, in one place. He told us that the leg had already started to
heal, improperly, and that the break was in a very precarious place,
very close to the growth plate. For such a youngster, this is not good
news. The advantage was that with 3 breaks in the radius, it gives the
bone more room to grow and heal properly. Annie's bone fracture is too
complicated to be casted.

Dr. Mabley, examining the x rays,
deciding on the best way to go about repairing this very badly broken
front leg.

Prepping for surgery
Examining the break

A stainless steel bone
plate that spans the length of the fractured bone is screwed
directly to the bone to provide stable internal fracture fixation.

Almost Done
And Now, after Dr.
Mabley's magic, it's Annie's turn to do her magic, HEAL!!
Annie, after surgery,
with her foster Mom, Val. Val is able to take Annie on walks and keep
her close, by carrying her, papoose style.

Annie's doing great, as
you can see. Here she is with her new family. They are the same family
that fostered her. :-))) What a lucky girl!!
We'll take her back to Dr. Mabley next week to see how her leg is
healing.
